Eurocopter’s Helibras subsidiary to modernize 36 AS350 Ecureuil helicopters operated by the Brazilian Army Aviation Command
Itajubá, Brazil, January 05, 2011
The Helicópteros do Brasil (Helibras) subsidiary of Eurocopter signed a contract for a major upgrade program on the Brazilian Army’s fleet of 36 AS350 Ecureuils. This modernization includes the rebuilding of three of these aircraft.
This activity, involving AS350s operated by the Brazilian Army Aviation Command (Comando de Aviação do Exército), will begin during 2011 – with its completion expected in 2018. The work is to be carried out at Helibras’ facilities in Itajubá, which are located in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
Eurocopter’s single-engine, multipurpose AS350 entered service with the Brazilian Army Aviation Command more than two decades ago, and Helibras’ upgrade program will ensure the continued operation of these helicopters for at least 25 additional years.
Included in the modernization program is the installation of a glass cockpit with three large liquid crystal displays, the integration of an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) with autopilot and the use of improved seats for pilots to provide better visibility and enhanced protection.
Much of this upgrade package developed by Helibras can be applied to AS350 Ecureuils flown by other operators in Brazil, representing an inventory of some 300 helicopters.
“Technology has made huge leaps since the first AS350 entered service, with the use of digital avionics and computers providing better safety and performance, along with a lower workload for pilots,” said Helibras President Eduardo Marson. “The application of our modernization package to the AS350 will significantly improve this helicopter’s versatility for the Brazilian Army Aviation Command, and we are offering these enhancements for other Ecureuil operators in Brazil as well.”
The AS350’s new avionics will be developed by Helibras in Brazil with Sagem (Safran Group) and Aeroeletrônica, based on a cooperation agreement established in November. The displays will be supplied by Sagem Avionics Inc., while Aeroeletrônica will be responsible for providing the computer and assembling the avionics system.

American Eurocopter delivers third AS350 B3 to the Miami-Dade Police Department
January 10, 2011
Grand Prairie, Texas - Today, American Eurocopter delivered another AS350 B3 helicopter to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s (MDPD) Aviation Unit. This is the third of four AS350 B3’s that have been ordered by the agency. The first AS350 B3 was delivered in 2008, and the MDPD will receive their fourth AS350 B3 later this year.
The AS350 B3 is a powerful and reliable aircraft that has become the platform of choice for Law Enforcement agencies across the United States and the world. It provides unparalleled visibility and unmatched performance combined with the flexibility for extensive mission equipment options and the added safety of its multiple-redundancy system design.
“The AS350 series gives Law Enforcement agencies the ability to equip their helicopters with an ever-expanding suite of mission equipment without pushing the limits of performance,” says Ed Van Winkle, American Eurocopter’s Law Enforcement Market Manager. The MDPD AS350 B3’s are equipped with a thermal imager, searchlight, moving map system, video downlink and tactical platforms for tactical team transport and deployment. American Eurocopter also delivered each helicopter with a night vision goggle (NVG) compatible cockpit, in addition to providing NVG training for all MDPD pilots.
The mission platform of the MDPD Aviation Unit has evolved in recent years to support additional initiatives in the Miami-Dade county and surrounding region. These include Homeland Security initiatives as well as port security and coverage for key county infrastructures. This aircraft will support those efforts and join the department’s Special Patrol Bureau’s Aviation Unit that includes a fleet of rotary and fixed wing aircraft.
The AS350 B3 is a single-engine helicopter known for its high-performance. It is equipped with a powerful 847 shp Turbomeca Arriel 2B1 engine. The AS350 family has established itself as the preferred platform for U.S. law enforcement agencies across the nation, including major federal operators such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
