Two boats used by Colonel Gaddafi’s special forces were blown out of the water and an anti-aircraft battery destroyed by Apache gunships operating from HMS Ocean.
In the latest action involving the Army Air Corps helicopters aboard Britain’s biggest warship, the Apaches were scrambled to intercept high-speed boats closing in on the besieged port of Misrata.
Pro-Government forces have made repeated attempts to disrupt shipping making for the rebel-held city, chiefly by attempting to lay mines in its approaches – attempts so far thwarted by NATO's equally-determined efforts to keep the port open.
An Allied warship on patrol in the western Gulf of Sirte detected the boats moving quickly towards Misrata and Ocean was alerted.

Britain's newest operational warship – HMS Dauntless – has arrived in the world's largest naval base ready to show international navies what she can do.
Fresh from working with the Americans’ newest carrier, the USS George H W Bush in the Western Approaches, the Portsmouth-based Type 45 has made her maiden voyage across the Atlantic to take part in a series of exercises and trials.

destroyer HMS Diamond enters service
The Royal Navy's newest and most advanced air defence destroyer HMS Diamond has entered service after completing extensive sea trials.
It is armed with the Sea Viper missile defence system which is capable of tracking and defending against multiple supersonic targets simultaneously. The system is backed by long and short range radar and missile systems that can search in excess of 400km.
Minister for Defence Equipment Support and Technology, Peter Luff, said: “I’m delighted to welcome the latest in this superb class of warship into the fleet, in what is another significant milestone in this hugely important project.

Britain's most advanced warship has a little extra firepower today with the installation of two automatic machine-guns which throw up a wall of steel against attackers.
HMS Daring has become the first Type 45 destroyer to receive the Phalanx Gatling gun – the latest version of the battle-proven weapon which serves as the last line of defence for numerous surface ships.
Phalanx has been around since the early 80s and was fitted to RN warships in the wake of the Falklands conflict when enemy missiles evaded the outer ring of task force defences and fatally damaged HMS Sheffield and the support vessel Atlantic Conveyor.
Nearly 30 years later and the most recent version of Phalanx, 1B, has been installed on the warship not merely to deal with the missile threat, but also to blast surface targets – such as speedboats or jetskis – out of the water by day or night.

Apache gunships practise strike power from the sea aboard Illustrious
Apache helicopter pilots have found their sea legs on the unfamiliar setting of HMS Illustrious.
The newly-refitted helicopter carrier – fresh from her £40m refit – has swapped Harrier jets for the imposing outlines of the Army gunships.
Crews from 664 Squadron, 4 Regiment Army Air Corps, took the chance to bump neatly into position on Lusty’s flight deck during a week of exercises in the Channel, just days after the famous carrier returned to Portsmouth following her 18-month ‘exile’ in Rosyth.
The Apaches are heavily in demand right now off Libya, where they’ve been repeatedly called upon to strike at government targets ashore from HMS Ocean.

"At the end of this process we will have a nuclear deterrent, we'll have a fleet of new submarines, we'll have a brand new aircraft carrier, we're going to have the Typhoon and the Joint Strike Fighter in terms of our Air Force, we're going to have brand new destroyers - the best built anywhere in the world. We're going to be a full-spectrum defence player."

Pues lo deja a entrever también el propio Cameron cuando le nombran el tema del Portaaviones... cosa que no podían dejar pasar los periodistas por la participación británica en Libia.
Saludos.
