the first of which (from my memory) happened during the night from 17 to 18 January 1991, when two MiG-25s attacked two EF-111As in the H-1 New area (central-NW Iraq) and fired three R-40s at them, scarring them away. Subsequently, a SAM downed the F-15E of Majs. Koritz and Holland, both of which were killed. A pair of escorting F-15Cs intervenned, firing a total of four Sparrows and two Sidewinders - without success - before another pair of Eagles joined the fight and fired four Sparrows more (supposedly, the last one hit the runway behind the landing Foxbat).

The second - and fourth MiG-25 engagement in total - followed supposedly one night later, with two MiG-25PDs engaging F-15Cs in the same area with several R-40s, but missing, and Eagles retaliating with a large number of Sparrows and Sidewinders, but missing as well.

The other was in the first night of Desert Storm, when an F-14A fired an AIM-7M at an MiG-25, but had to break the lock-on (so the missile missed), when the pilot was not sure if he was shooting at a Foxbat or an F/A-18. The story goes that the same MiG-25 subsequently shot down the Hornet of Lt.Cdr. Speicher....

The aircraft F/A 18C BuNo 163484 flown by Lieutenant Commander Michael S. Spiecher (VFA-81 of the carrier USS "Saratoga", KIA) was shot down by a radar guided air to air missile RD-40RD fired by an iraqui MiG-25 PDS flown by Captain Zuhair Dawood of the 96 Sqdn of the AQAJAI. the first night of combat over Iraq.
