£200M contract for Eurofighter Tranche 3A radar awarded to SELEX Galileo
SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company, has been awarded a contract worth more than £200M (approximately Euro 242 million) to supply an additional 88 Captor radar systems for the Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 3A programme.
The Captor Mechanically Scanned (M-Scan) radar is currently the primary sensor on the Eurofighter Typhoon and is considered best-in-class.
Deliveries are due to commence in 2012 with manufacturing taking place in Italy, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.
“We are delighted to continue providing the Captor radar, having driven the programme from the very start” said SELEX Galileo CEO Steve Mogford, adding: “As a key partner of the Eurofighter programme we are strongly committed to delivering the best technology on the market, ensuring that the aircraft continues to meet the most stringent operational requirements”.
SELEX Galileo produces the radar alongside Euroradar consortium partners EADS Defence Electronics and Indra, with over 400 Captor M-Scan radars for the Typhoon programme delivered to date.
The contract follows on from the recently announced AESA radar development programme, and will provide continuity of production to the Euroradar consortium.
Captor is a multimode radar for high performance combat aircraft. It detects, identifies, prioritises and engages targets beyond the effective range of the enemy weapon systems whilst remaining resistant to severe electronic jamming. Captor is one of the most technically advanced airborne radar systems in the world.
The contract was awarded by BAE Systems, a key aeronautical partner in the Eurofighter Typhoon programme.
BAE orders Captor M radars for Tranche 3A Eurofighters
By Craig Hoyle
Selex Galileo has won a £200 million ($317 million) contract from BAE Systems to supply 88 mechanically scanned Captor radars to equip Tranche 3A examples of the Eurofighter Typhoon for Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
Announced on 5 October, the contract will ensure continued production of the Captor until an active electronically scanned array antenna becomes available for operational use from 2015. The four Eurofighter partner nations approved the development of the E-Captor radar in July, with development work under way.
"As a key partner of the Eurofighter programme we are strongly committed to delivering the best technology on the market, ensuring that the aircraft continues to meet the most stringent operational requirements," says Selex Galileo chief executive Steve Mogford.

Equipment deliveries are due to start in 2012 under the new award, with the work to be performed by the company and its Euroradar consortium partners EADS Defence Electronics and Indra. It is unclear why the new order is for only 88 sensors, as Eurofighter's Tranche 3A contract covers the production of 112 aircraft.
Selex Galileo says more than 400 Captor M radars have been delivered so far, with the systems also integrated on Typhoons for export customers Austria and Saudi Arabia.
BAE also last month gave the Selex Galileo-led EuroDASS consortium a roughly £400 million contract to deliver Praetorian self-protection equipment for Tranche 3A Eurofighters.
