Sao Paulo embarks on sea trials
The Brazilian Navys aircraft carrier, NAe Sao Paulo, lef Rio de Janeiro in late December for sea trials following an upgrade programme worth USD75 million in which the ships systems were overhauled and modernised. The 32.780 ton carrier has ben at Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro (AMRJ) completing the repairs and modifications under the Reforma do Navio-Aeródromo Sao Paulo programme since May 2005.
Captain Francisco Mont´Alverne, manager for the maintenance and modernisation of SP, told Janes on 17 december that the ships propulsion system has been rebuilt and the carrier has also been fitted with a new SATCOM system, Mistral sa missiles and a new electronic warfare system. Sao Paulos steam-driven lateral catapult systema has been rebuilt in preparation for the arrival of a contingent of A-4 Skyhawk combat aircraft tha will embark in February. Skyhawk pilots will train for carrier operations after a four and half years hiatus and the be joined by naval helicopters so their aircrew can refresh their deck landing skills.
Entrenamiento de la tripulacion, pero por lo que se aun no salio de las amarraciones. Estan entrenando con el buque parado.
